A Guide to Measuring Countertops
Here are the titles with extended descriptions for each step to measure your countertops:
STEP 1: Measure Countertop Depth Including Overhang
Grab your tape measure and take note of the distance from the wall to the edge of your existing countertop. Be sure to include the countertop overhang in your measurement, which is the part that extends past the cabinetry. This will ensure your new countertops provide the desired amount of usable space and aesthetic appeal.
STEP 2: Measure Total Countertop Length
After you've determined the countertop depth, it's time to measure the total length of your countertop runs. This may involve measuring multiple sections if your kitchen has L-shaped or U-shaped counters. Add all the individual lengths together to get a final measurement for the entire countertop area.
STEP 3: Calculate Countertop Square Footage
Now that you have both the depth and total length measurements, you can calculate the square footage of your countertops. Simply multiply the depth (in feet) by the total length (in feet) to get the total square footage. This measurement is helpful for Alachua Granite to accurately estimate the materials required for your project.

STEP 4: Wall Locations & Stone Backsplash Selection
Make a note of the location of all walls surrounding your countertops. Additionally, specify which walls you plan to have a stone backsplash installed. Knowing this will help Alachua Granite understand your design vision and provide tailored recommendations for the stone selection process.
STEP 5: Mark Sink & Appliance Placement
Clearly mark on your measurements or sketch the planned location of your sink. If you have a range or cooktop, indicate their placement as well. This information is crucial for Alachua Granite to ensure the countertops are fabricated with accurate cutouts for your plumbing and appliances.
STEP 6: Identify Island & Additional Countertop Areas
If your kitchen has an island or any other areas where you want natural stone countertops installed, be sure to identify them in your notes. Alachua Granite will need to know the dimensions of these additional surfaces to provide a complete estimate for your project.
